Overview
Parent involvement can vary based on socioeconomic status, work scheduling and flexibility, education levels, and opinion and trust in the school system. These visualizations aim to better understand how parent involvement in schools affect student behavior and performance
Parent Involvement Visualizations
1) There is a strong inverse relationship of neighborhoods with lower per capita income have higher teen birth rates, often exceeding 80 or even 100 per 1,000, which is 4 to 5 times the national average.
2) The Southwest Side, West side, and South Side dominate the low income, high teen birth rate section of the graph.
3) Neighborhoods in the Central and Far North regions are have lower teen preganancy rates and higher per capita income.
1) Areas with weak or very weak parent involvement have higher rates of misconduct
2) The South and Southwest side have the highest proportion of weak parent involvement. These areas also have the highest rates of poverty, suggesting that higher rates poverty cause lower parent involvement
3) Very Strong parent involvement appears in wealthier or more resourced northern neighborhoods,(near Evanston or the North Side of Chicago). These areas also show smaller dots, meaning fewer misconduct incidents. This suggests that higher parent involvement reduces misconduct in schools
1) The South and South West side make up the largest proportion of communities wihtout a HS diploma. These areas also have the highest rate of misconduct, suggesting the misconduct may be a preliminary indicator of failure to complete highschool
2) Central Chicago has the smallest share of communties without a HS diploma
3) Areas with less poverty, North and Central Chicago, have lower rates of failure to recieve a HS diploma
